On Abbey Green at the heart of Battle, the Medieval Fayre is a two-day May bank-holiday celebration of all things medieval — fighting knights and fire eaters, a juggling jester, lacemakers, potters, a yarn-craft hut, and a Hands on History stand where you can try on armour and hear about medieval surgical techniques. The May Queen is crowned on Monday. Battle Cider, barbecue and a spit roast feed everyone in between.
Battle is a 30-minute drive from Rye, and the fayre sits a few yards from the 1066 battlefield at Battle Abbey itself — pair the two for a properly Sussex bank-holiday day out. Stay riverside at The River Haven, drive over for the day, and be back at the quay for dinner.
