For two weeks each spring, Pashley Manor's eleven acres are carpeted with over 40,000 tulips in a hundred varieties, planted into colour-themed garden 'rooms'. Wander from cool whites around an old brick terrace to a riot of reds and oranges threaded with bronze fennel, then on to soft pink peony-flowered blooms cloistered between pleached pear trees. The Bloms Bulbs marquee — run by 70-time Chelsea Gold winners — is on hand to identify favourites and take orders. There's a café serving homemade lunches and scones, a gift shop and rotating garden sculpture too.
Pashley sits on the Sussex–Kent border, a half-hour drive from Rye. Stay riverside at The River Haven and book a table for dinner — you'll have earned it after a day among the tulips.
