It happened here. On 10 and 11 October 2026, English Heritage marks the 960th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings on the very ground where King Harold fell to Duke William's Normans in 1066. Over 500 re-enactors set up Saxon and Norman encampments across the battlefield — wander between the rival armies, handle weapons and armour, meet falconers and their birds, and browse a medieval market. Kids can have a go at archery or join a sword school, before the day builds to a full staged battle beneath the abbey ruins.
It's an easy run over from Rye. Stay riverside at The River Haven, settle in by the water and make a weekend of it — there's plenty more 1066 history to follow along the coast.
Stay at The River Haven
Battle is a 30-minute drive from Rye. Stay riverside at The River Haven and step back into 1066 in the morning.
