Sussex bonfire is its own beast — torchlit, costumed, theatrical — and Rye Bonfire Society does it as well as anyone. On the Saturday closest to 5 November (this year the 14th), Rye fills with visiting societies in 18th-century costume, brass bands and burning crosses. The procession winds out from the cobbled lanes of the Citadel down to The Salts, where a vast bonfire is lit on the cricket ground and a half-hour fireworks display erupts over the river. It's loud, it's smoky, and it's brilliant.
The Salts is a 15-minute walk from The River Haven. Stay riverside and walk home through the cobbled lanes when the fireworks have faded.
