Captain Howey and Count Zborowski's 1927 miniature railway is one of the great eccentric survivors of British transport — a one-third-scale main line running 13½ miles across the flat sweep of Romney Marsh, from Hythe through Dymchurch and New Romney down to the shingle at Dungeness. The engines are Pacifics in miniature, the carriages low enough that adults duck to board. Even on a grey day there's something irresistible about the chuff of a steam loco coming across the marsh.
New Romney is the operational heart of the line and an easy 30-minute drive from Rye. Stay riverside at The River Haven, ride down to Dungeness for the lighthouse and the RSPB reserve, and be back for dinner by the river.
Stay at The River Haven
New Romney is a 30-minute drive from Rye along the coast. Stay riverside at The River Haven and combine the railway with Dungeness at the southern terminus — or with the Day of Syn at Dymchurch over August bank holiday.
