Rye's cobbled streets reward a guided look — half of what you walk past on a self-guided wander has a story you'd never guess from the outside. The Heritage Centre's walking tours, led by knowledgeable local guides, range from before the Norman Conquest right up to the present day — Cinque Port history and French raids, the great fires and centuries of smuggling, plus the writers who made the town their home (Henry James and E.F. Benson among them). The route covers Conduit Hill, Watchbell Street and Turkey Cock Lane, and takes in the marshes where the sea once reached — now nearly two miles distant.
The Heritage Centre is a five-minute walk from The River Haven along Strand Quay. Park at the hotel, follow the river to the start, and let the guide unpick the town for you — then walk home for lunch knowing what every door used to be.
