Camber's seven miles of golden sand and the only sand-dune system in East Sussex sit just along the coast from Rye, looking out across the English Channel towards France on a clear day. The dunes are a Site of Special Scientific Interest, fragile and roped-off in places to let the marram recover, but the beach below them is huge — at low tide the wet sand stretches the best part of half a mile, room enough for kite-flyers, land-yachters, dog-walkers and pony-trekkers without ever feeling busy.
Three council car parks serve the beach; the central one is lifeguarded through summer. Stay at The River Haven, drive over in the morning — just ten minutes — and be back for a riverside lunch, or pack a picnic and stay out until the tide turns.
