Set in an old sail loft on Strand Quay, the Heritage Centre is the friendliest way into Rye's history. The centrepiece is The Story of Rye — a 20-minute light-and-sound show on the famous Town Model that tracks the town through French raids, fires, smuggling and royal visits. A second show, WWII: Rye's Story, covers the wartime years; the Old Penny Arcade keeps a row of vintage machines in working order; and a free exhibition fills in the rest. The centre is also the meeting point for Rye After Dark and the Saturday-morning guided walks.
The centre is a five-minute walk from The River Haven along Strand Quay. Park at the hotel, wander in along the river, watch a show and try your luck on the Old Penny Arcade — the perfect first stop on a Rye weekend.
